The incumbent plans, conducts, and publishes original research to determine metabolic/physiologic/molecular processes that could be exploited for development of novel control technologies for he effective area-wide integrated management of subterranean termites (particularly the Formosan subterranean termite).

Major Duties:

-Incumbent participates with a team and determines metabolic/physiologic/molecular processes that could be exploited for development of novel control technologies for the effective area-wide integrated management of subterranean termites (particularly the Formosan subterranean termite).

-Plans, conducts, and publishes original research.

Specific objectives of the research are to (1) determine metabolic or physiologic processes involved with the growth and development of the termite or colonies that could provide the biochemical/physiological/molecular basis for disruption of colony formation, development and survival; and (2) integrate current and these evolving molecular-based strategies into an effective area-wide termite population control program.

The expected results of the research are the development of highly termite-specific control techniques that would reduce unwanted environmental consequences while providing highly specific termite control, achievement of novel molecular/physiologically-based control products for the Formosan subterranean termite, reduced use of other insecticides, and targeted application of termiticide in substantially lower quantities for reduced environmental impact and lower exposure of non-targeted organisms to harmful chemicals.
