JOB SUMMARY:

TOUR OF DUTY: 8, 10 or 12 Hour Shifts including Coverage of Nights, Holidays and Weekends.



Successful candidate will be responsible for providing quality care for emergency patients presenting to the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. Candidate must possess and maintain the appropriate professional knowledge, competencies and skills to respond promptly and expertly to the need for emergency medical care.  Candidate must also have effective communication skills and work cooperatively with all staff that care for emergency patients and their families. Candidate must be compliant with VA policies and procedures as well as those of the Philadelphia VA Medical Center and its' medical staff.  Candidate must be physically capable of shift work, including nights. The ideal candidate will have completed an approved training program in emergency medicine, internal medicine or family practice and is board eligible/certified and should have recent emergency department or critical care experience.  Current ACLS certification is required. Board certification in Emergency medicine is required.

Qualifications and Evaluations

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Basic Requirements:  Reference: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G2.

Citizenship: Must be a United States Citizen (non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens).

Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.  The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs the year in which the course of study was completed.  Approved schools are:

(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Colleges for the year the degree was granted; (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year which the degree was granted; (3) Schools (including foreign schools accepted by the licensing body of the State, Territory or Commonwealth or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure

You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.

You must submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test before you can be appointed into this position.

Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination.

(1) Must meet basic qualification standards for appointment.  Clinical privileges must be recommended by the chief, staff/professional standards board as granted by the director of the Philadelphia VA Medical Center.  Incumbent must provide complete credentials and privileging information in a timely expeditious way. Board certification/eligibility in emergency medicine is required.

(2) Must meet physical requirements.

(3) Must be able to work night shifts, holiday, and weekends.

(4) Must complete a security background investigation for continued employment.

(5) Proof of citizenship required, i.e., birth certificate with raised seal, U.S. passport, etc.

(6) Proof of social security card required.
