As a uniformed employee of the National Park Service (NPS), you serve as a front-line representative of the agency; provide answers to visitor questions concerning the specific park area; explain the area's recreational opportunities, including NPS Interpretative services, concession-operated facilities and services, and campground availability, distribute maps, brochures, and other printed material; provide directions and routes of travel through the park; and inform visitors of potential safety hazards. You will provide public orientation and explanations of current park events, resource management projects, management policies and legislative updates on issues affecting the natural, historical and/or cultural preservation of the area. You will be responsible for collecting appropriate fees at a park entrance station, visitor center, campground, or other visitor contact station following established accountability for handling government funds. Other duties include visitor management-related services such as traffic control, radio dispatching and/or backcountry patrols.

Qualifications and Evaluations

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and education as described in the Occupational/Assessment Questions section.

Specialized experience is defined as experience that demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) necessary to successfully perform the duties required of the position.

Position is subject to shift rotation, evening, weekend and holiday work.

 

Physical Demands: Standing for long periods of time, walking, bending, lifting of moderately heavy items and sedentary work is required.

 

Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money.

This position is full-time and "Subject to Furlough" which means the position is seasonal in nature and does not provide for employment on a full-time year-round basis.  The employee will work or be in a pay and duty status at least 13 pay periods and not more than 25 pay periods in any service year.  When the employee’s services will not be required at certain times due to lack of work, lack of funds, or weather conditions, the employee will be in a nonwork and nonpay status.  However, he or she may elect to be placed on annual leave and remain in pay status for a portion of the period so long as the employee’s total period in pay status does not exceed 25 pay periods in any service year.

 

Permanent employees obtain housing either through a bid system or by assignment into shared quarters. Bidding on available housing is very competitive, and permanent employees may be assigned shared quarters until other housing becomes available. Because of our housing shortage, when a permanent employee is assigned shared quarters, the park is not able to provide accommodations for family members and pets. OTHER INFORMATION:

This position is a permanent, career-conditional or career appointment, as appropriate. The position will be filled on a full time basis. Upon completing any required probationary period, the position will become permanent.

AREA INFORMATION:  The South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park located in Northwest Arizona, approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 85 miles Northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7,000 feet.   Temperatures range from approximately 85 degrees in the summer to 17 degrees in the winter.   Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, banking facilities, churches, a recreation center, a clinic with resident physicians and several restaurants.   The park community consists of some 2,000 people, including employees of the NPS and concessionaires and their family members.   There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. The park community is small enough that many employees choose to walk or bike from their homes to work.   Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff.   Recreational opportunities include hiking, river rafting, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities.

 

Desert View is located on the East Rim of Grand Canyon National Park located in northwest Arizona approximately 83 miles north of Williams and 82 miles northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7,000 feet.   Temperatures range from approximately 85 degrees in the summer to about 17 degrees in winter.   Desert View has a general store and a gas station (open seasonally).   Approximately 28 miles West is Grand Canyon Village which has school from K-12, daycare facilities, post office, banking facilities, general store, and a medical clinic with resident physicians, churches and various restaurants.   Complete shopping, education, medical, and professional services are located in Flagstaff and Williams.

18. Collect fees for a variety of services while following established accountability guidelines.

19. Provide information assistance to the public (customers/visitors).

20. Work within a park service Visitor Center dealing with many hundreds of contacts on a daily basis.

21. Provide accurate information about items of interest to the public (customers/visitors).

22. Resolve customer/visitor complaints.

23. Based on brief contact, determine appropriate maps, brochures, and other informational materials to provide to customers/visitors.

24. Respond to non-routine or more complex requests for information in a visitor center or similar setting.

25. Respond to a customer disagreement with recreational programs or organizational policy with tact and diplomacy.
