JOB SUMMARY:

The Federal Railroad Administration, an Operating Administration
under the Department of Transportation, was created to promote and
enforce safety throughout the U.S. railroad system, rehabilitate the
Northeast Corridor rail passenger services, consolidate Federal
support for rail transportation, and support research and
development
for rail transportation for passengers, railroad employees and the
general public.

Railroad Safety Inspectors are needed to maintain safe operating
conditions throughout the nation's network of rail lines.  The job
of
the Inspectors is to inspect for compliance with Federal laws,
regulations, rules and standards and to conduct and report on
accident investigations.  The Inspector writes reports of findings
and seeks correction of unsafe conditions and may be called upon to
testify as an expert witness in civil suits.  The demands of these
jobs are many, requiring skill in evaluation, fact-finding, report
writing; comprehension and application of technical and regulatory
standards; the ability to gain the cooperation of individuals and
organizations; and knowledge of methods used in installation,
operation, maintenance or manufacturing of railroad equipment and
systems.

The GS-12 level Railroad Safety Inspectors positions are
NOT entry level and require experience in conducting railroad
accident investigations. The IDEAL CANDIDATE should have skills in
evaluation, fact-finding, report writing, as well as the
comprehension and application of technical standards, regulatory
standards and knowledge of correct methods of the installation,
operation, maintenance, and/or manufacturing of railroad equipment
and systems pertaining to Track.

The demands of these jobs require skill in evaluation, fact-finding,
report writing, as well as the comprehension and application of
technical standards, regulatory standards and knowledge of correct
methods of the installation, operation, maintenance, and/or
manufacturing of railroad equipment and systems.

THIS VACANCY ESTABLISHES THE STANDING REGISTER (A LIST OF
APPLICANTS) FROM WHICH FRA WILL CONSIDER EXTERNAL CANDIDATES FOR
FUTURE POSITIONS THAT MAY BECOME OPEN FOR GS-2121-12 TRACK SAFETY
INSPECTORS.
Any previously submitted applications for this
position are no longer valid.  You must apply to this vacancy to be
considered for these positions.

If the Federal Rail Administration (FRA) has a vacancy in a location
for which you requested consideration and your application is in the
top group, your application will be reviewed.  If you are deemed
qualified, you are eligible to be referred for future positions to
the selecting official.

Once on file, your application may receive employment consideration
for 12 months (365 days) from the date of the initial submission of
your application based on your indicated location preference and
availability, or until a new vacancy register is established,
whichever comes first.  To extend the period of eligibility
for an additional 12 months, you must access your application(s)
online at MYUSAJOBS, review and/or update responses to the
vacancy questions and select "Apply to this vacancy".

Please note that each time you re-apply to the vacancy, it
overwrites
your original submission and extends consideration of your
application for twelve months from the date of the most recent
submission.  If you do not access your application, it will
expire and you will be removed from consideration.  If you
wish to remove your application from consideration prior to the
expiration date of your application, you must contact the office via
email at Transjobs@dot.gov.

Please note that the FRA uses single certification to refer
candidates from the register since the FRA may fill similar
positions
in multiple locations simultaneously.  This means that if multiple
Railroad safety inspector positions in the same discipline are being
filled at the same time in different locations, candidates will only
be referred and considered for one duty location at a time.

At any point after submission of your application, you may check
online to see if your application has been reviewed and was referred
by logging in at MYUSAJOBS and clicking on "Applications."
