The Environmental Management Professional Development Corps (EMPDC) provides EM with a continuing source of highly competent personnel with the skills and knowledge to meet both current and future goals and missions. The corporate training and development objective of the EMPDC is to provide interns with a broad overview of the Department of Energy, its business lines, and instruction on how it accomplishes its mission. We are seeking individuals that are interested, inquisitive and highly motivated to play an important role in making our country's environment free from risk associated with our nation's nuclear weapons production legacy. The Cost Estimator and Value Management Specialist position is in the business track of the EMPDC, offering participants assignments and activities that are developmental in nature. This and all our internships are designed to provide participants with experiences that build strength in his/her technical business knowledge base, demonstrate the application of theory to real world problems, and allow the application of the interns' education and knowledge to actual work situations. As a Cost Estimator and Value Management Specialist "in-training", your purpose will be concentrating on the technical focus areas of civil, geotechnical, soils & groundwater rediation, structural, facilities deactivation and decommissioning, and waste tank closure. You will learn to provide technical advice and guidance in order to execute EM's cost quality management program.
The Mission of the Department of Energy's Office of Environmental Management(EM)is the accelerated risk reduction and cleanup of the environmental legacy of this nation's nuclear weapons program and government-sponsored nuclear energy research. The program is one of the largest, diverse and technically complex environmental cleanup operations in the world and includes responsibility for 114 sites across the country.
EM is issuing several major acquisitions/contracts over the next few years that will provide incentives and the framework for safely and cost effectively clean up the nation's legacy of waste. As a cost estimators/value management specialists in-training you will be at the forefront of responsible environmental clean-up that ensures our nation and our communities are safer. You will have an opportunity to build on your current education and experience to provide technical advise and guidance in order to: - Execute EM's cost quality management program. - Participate in the development of government cost and schedule estimates for proposed projects and program baselines. - Implement documented guidance and standards (e.g., EM Cost Estimating Guide, EM Risk Identification & Management Guide, etc.), handbooks and other materials for use by program and Federal Project Directors (project managers). - Research, analyze and evaluate the technical assumptions, site characteristics and conditions, contamination characteristic (type, source and extant), applicability and availability of technology, risk considerations, regulatory requirements, economic considerations, safety and security restrictions, and other factors upon which estimates are based. On occasion you may visit remote field sites and project locations to assess site conditions that may influence project cost and schedule estimates. You may be required to enter high hazard areas including radioactive, chemical and other hazards associated with a cleanup and demolition project. Moderate physical exertion may be required, as well as use of protective equipment. Your assignments will also include rotational work experiences in a variety of functional or support program areas. It is expected during the course of your internship that you will transition from a level of working jointly with a mentor or supervisor in these areas to assuming full responsibility for your assigned functions.
