The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency and one of the world's premiere scientific organization. ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority effecting American agriculture.

The incumbent will conduct research on generation, characterization, and applications for novel monoclonal antibodies (MAb) specific for the prion protein PrP, and also in general research regarding the biochemistry and pathobiology of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) diseases.
Research focuses on generation of MAb for prion/TSE detection. Biochemical and cell biology studies will lead to development of a novel immunogen and screen methodologies.
The goal of this work is development of methods suitable for diagnosis of preclinical TSE, and for monitoring TSE/prion decontamination.
This position requires a Ph.D. in biology, chemistry, or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
Broad understanding of protein chemistry, with experience in common lab techniques for analytical biochemistry, cell biology, and immunology, including especially, PAGE, Westernblot, ELISA, liquid chromatography, cell culture, microscopy, and rodent handling, surgery, and/or disease models. Research experience with prions is preferred, or other knowledge of the biochemistry of abnormal or misfolded proteins, or of fibrillar aggregates or plaques of protein. Knowledge of special techniques, protocols, routines, and regulations for laboratory work performed under BSL-2 contaminant is also desirable.
