Job Summary:
Find Solutions to Agricultural Problems that Affect Americans Every Day, From Field to Table

The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency and one of the world's premiere scientific organization.  ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority effecting American agriculture.

Major Duties:

The incumbent will conduct research in the broad area of insect molecular ecology and population genetics, with particular emphasis on Blastobasis repartella, a newly discovered lepidopteran insect pest of switchgrass, a potential biofuel crop.  The incumbent will use existing, and develop as needed, molecular genetic markers to analyze genetic variation at neutral loci from geographic and temporal samples of B. repartella to estimate genetic differentiation, isolation-by-distance relationships, gene flow, and per-generation migration rates at different geographic scales.  Methods will include standard molecular and population genetics techniques, and genotyping methods that will depend on the type of markers employed.  Participation in additional molecular ecology projects involving insect pests of switchgrass or corn is possible.



Qualifications:

This position requires a recent Ph.D in Molecular Biology, Entomology, Ecology, or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.  Knowledge and experience in population genetics, molecular markers, and associated statistical analyses are required.  Experience with insects, especially insect pests of agriculture, is desirable but not required.

Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
