JOB SUMMARY:

The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency and one of the world's premiere scientific organization.  ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority effecting American agriculture.

The incumbent will evaluate the effect of probiotics and other dietary changes on inflammation and metabolic syndrome induced by a high fat/high fructose/high cholesterol diet in Ossabaw pigs.  Changes in microbial populations and specific bacterial species in the intestine will be determined and the associated changes on host immune and physiological responses in the intestine, adipose tissue, and targeted organ systems.  Monitoring methods will include immune and physiological assays, real-time quantitative PCR, culture methods, and bioinformatic evaluation of microbial population changes.



Qualifications and Evaluations

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

This position requires a recent Ph.D. (Ph. d. within last 4 years) in Molecular Biology, Nutrition, Immunology, Microbiology or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. 

Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
