The incumbent serves as a Food Technologist in the Processed Foods Research Unit,
Serves as a part of a research team that is conducting basic and applied research investigating dietary plant fiber, flavonoids, and other components that regulate genes related to obesity and metabolic disease in animal models and in vitro preparations.
Duties include:
*Develops and performs animal models studies, molecular biological assays, biochemical assays, and physiological tests in support of food and metabolic research.
*Conducts research regarding phytonutrients derived from byproducts of plant food processing, nutritional regulation of lipid metabolism, and the prevention of obesity and obesity-related disease.
*Searches scientific literature for principles, methods, and procedures and selects the most appropriate for the research goals and fiscal resources.
*Participates in the design, planning and implementation of new projects, collecting data, statistical analysis, interpretation of results, report preparation and publication of findings.
*Provides proper technical advice, when needed, to lower level support personnel assigned to research programs in the unit.
*Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Requirements:
Food Technologist (GS-1382):
Degree: food technology, or dairy technology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, physics or a related discipline or field of biological or physical science. The course work must have been comprised of at least 30 semester hours in the basic biological and physical sciences, and included at least 20 semester hours if food technology and closely related subjects, or 20 semester hours in subjects that can be applied directly to food technology.
OR
Combination of education and experience – course work equivalent to a major, including the course work specified, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Additional Requirements:
GS-11: Three full years of progressively higher level graduate education or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. If qualifying based on education, your education must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities (see below) necessary to do the work.
Specialized Experience is experience which has equipped you with the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - 'KSAs' required to perform the duties of this position:
1. Knowledge of the principles, theories and practices of nutritional molecular biology.
2. Ability to calibrate, maintain, operate, and modify moderately complex analytical instruments such as Real Time-PCR, plate reader, freeze dryers, tissue extraction equipment, spectroscopy, energy expenditure by CO2/O2, and blood pressure.
3. Ability to perform animal handling and use techniques such as injections, gavage, and blood and tissue collection.
4. Skill in the use of personal computers and microarray software packages for data collection, statistical analyses, and reporting.
