Vacancy exists for one Medical Records Administration Specialist(Full-time) at the VA Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida. Tour of Duty:  8:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.  The North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System is affiliated with heath care programs at local colleges/universities. Florida has a low cost of living and no state income tax. Enjoy excellent recreational activities year-round at nearby beaches.

Duties

DUTIES INCLUDE:  Under the direction of the Chief, HIMS, the incumbent serves as a primary source to Medical Administration Service (MAS) and all clinical services/selections for Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) and other patient grouping management.  Supervises the Coding Unit staffed by Medical Records Technicians.  The incumbent extracts and presents pertinent data to appropriate clinical staff and management, in both narrative and graphical format on a recurring basis, and presents techniques, procedures, and processes for correction of areas of inefficiency.  Makes final determinations on the use and submission of ICD-9-CM codes used to record new diagnostic terms, treatments, drugs, procedures, and therapies for which no reference of precedent is available.   Maintains liaison with medical record departments in other area health care providers in order to facilitate the administration of the local medical records program. 



Qualifications and Evaluations

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must be U.S. citizens and be proficient in spoken and written English; and must meet the physical requirements of the position. 

Basic Requirements for Medical Record Administration Specialist:  Three years of experience in the field of medical records and health information systems, at least one year of this experience must be comparable to a GS-7 level position;  OR education equivalent to a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university or college; OR  equivalent combinations of experience and education may be used to meet basic requirements.  

GRADE REQUIREMENTS:

GS-11At least one year of experience comparable to the GS-9 grade level, or education equivalent to 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education  or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited university or college in the field of health information. 

Transcripts must be submitted if using education to qualify.

Creditable experience includes duties such as: project management and process improvement; advisory capacity in regards to adequate medical record documentation, health information services, and/or computerized patient records based on current standards; implementation, integration, and/or use of software programs or information systems as they relate to health information management processes, policies, and procedures; knowledge and use of privacy and confidentiality requirements; knowledge and use of medical and legal requirements related to paper and electronic medical records; communication with professionals in higher level positions;  planning, development, direction, and evaluation of health information or related functions; application of human resource management; and skill in administrative management.   



GS-9. At least one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-7 level, or education equivalent to 2 full years of progressively higher education or master's or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university in a field directly related to health information. 

Creditable experience includes duties such as: interpretation and application of clinical classification systems; determination and evaluation of compliance with regulatory and accrediting bodies such as Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, etc.; advisory capacity on technical aspects of health information management issues; information extraction, generation of reports from various databases, and analyzation of data; application of human resource management; skill in administrative management; delegation of authority; and evaluation and oversight of people and programs.           



You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.

After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position.
