The National Science Foundation is seeking candidates for the position of Program Director for the Economic Program within the Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES), Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) Arlington, VA
The Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES) supports research to develop and advance scientific knowledge focusing on economic, legal, political and social systems, organizations and institutions. In addition, SES supports research on the intellectual and social contexts that govern the development and use of science and technology. SES programs consider proposals that fall squarely within disciplines, but they also encourage and support interdisciplinary projects, which are evaluated through joint review among Programs in SES, as well as joint review with programs in other Divisions, and NSF-wide multi-disciplinary panels, as appropriate. The Program Director will have primary responsibilities involving proposal evaluation, project development and support, program planning, and related administrative duties. Additional responsibilities will include coordination of Foundation-wide education efforts, and advising on logistics requirements of the computer science and education technology field. The scientific expertise of the program director is critical in insuring leadership in program planning and internal management and for translating these into effective scientific, budgetary, and operational activities for the division and directorate. The required special knowledge, skills and background are essential; and individuals possessing such knowledge, skills and background are in high demand.
Applicants must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in Economics, plus six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the program are required. Appointees are expected to have significant and relevant knowledge of research related to Economics. Also desirable is knowledge of the general scientific community, skill in written communication and preparation of technical reports, an ability to communicate orally, and several years of successful independent research of the kind normally expected of the academic rank of professor, plus experience in interdisciplinary research groups or centers. All appointees are expected to function effectively both within specific programs and in a team mode, contributing to and coordinating with organizations in the Directorate, across the Foundation, and with other Federal and State government agencies and private-sector organizations as necessary.
This position will be filled on a one or two year Visiting Scientist Appointment or an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignment. Visiting Scientist appointments will be made under the Excepted Authority of the NSF Act with a current salary range of $102,721 to $160,078 including locality pay for the area.

Quality Ranking Factors
For a Visiting Scientist appointment, the individual is in a non-pay leave status from his/her home institution and is appointed to NSF's payroll as a Federal employee. NSF withholds Social Security and provides reimbursement to the home institution for fringe benefits.
Under the provisions of the Intergovernmental Personnel Act, assignees remains on the payroll of his/her home institution and the home institution will continue to administer pay and benefits. NSF reimburses the home institution for NSF's negotiated share of the cost of the assignment.
